SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Western New Mexico University's department of Athletics announced Wednesday the resignation of Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Digital Design, Dakota Spillers effective April 7th.
Â
Spillers, a three-year veteran for the WNMU Athletics administrative staff, is stepping down to accept the Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations at William Jessup University, in Rocklin, Calif.
Â
"I am incredibly thankful for Western New Mexico University and Athletic Director, Scott Noble, for giving me the opportunity to showcase what I had in me. Mr. Noble and Associate Athletic Director, Matt Enriquez, gave me opportunities to grow this amazing department and ultimately allowed me to grow personally and professionally," said Spillers. "I was fortunate enough to come to work and enjoy every second. Working in college athletics is a dream and I am very proud of the process, work, and strides WNMU Athletics is making in providing the experience for student-athletes."
Â
In his role at WNMU, Spillers served as the direct strategic communications contact, overseeing the departments 13 intercollegiate sports. During his time, Spillers was an advocate for Denim Days and Red Flag Campaign. He also served as WNMU Tennis Coach in the spring of 2023.
Â
Spillers was also the lead in the WNMU Athletics website redesign (WNMUmustangs.com) in 2021, created and launched the WNMU Athletics mobile app in 2021, started Mustang Radio (
https://wnmumustangs.mixlr.com) covering all WNMU Athletics home events, and initiated the partnership with eTeamSponsor.
Â
In addition to administrative duties, Spillers played a tremendous role in the WNMU game day operations and fan engagement, assisting in the staffing and production of athletic home events, which included live stream broadcasts, official statistics, public-address, and created content for the videoboards. Spillers handled all of the department's graphic design, coordinated social media accounts, and helped produce Rawhides Mob and athletic videos in efforts to showcase WNMU student-athletes.
Â
Spillers goes back to his alma mater, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees, as well as played baseball for the Warriors. Spillers and his fiancé, Ariana Landeros, will be getting married on June 24th.
Â
Statement from Athletic Director Scott Noble:
"It is always difficult to see bright young administrators leave your team and move on, but you understand it when its for the best. This is the case with Dakota and his fiancé Ari. It is my hope that the experiences Dakota has gotten here at Western New Mexico serves him well as he moves on to his Alma Mater. He and Ari will be sorely missed. Sport Information has gone through dramatic transformation over the last 10 years and it continues to drive our athletic departments' branding, name recognition and awareness. We will search long and hard to find one with that drive, that urgency, that excitement it takes to lead our sport communications and digital design department."
