Game Recap: Softball | | Dakota Spillers

Mustangs Split The Day Versus Angelo State

SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Yard was energized Friday afternoon, with the Western New Mexico University Mustangs softball team splitting the day, winning the first game 7-2 and falling in the second game 11-3.

GAME ONE:

The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning after Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) hit an RBI double. WNMU led 1-0.

In the top of the 4th inning, ASU's Keilei Garcia hit an RBI sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1.

The Rambelles added to their lead in the top of the 5th inning, after Lindsey Evans hit an RBI single. ASU led 2-1.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Mustangs and Cecy Jurado (El Monte, California/South El Monte High school) gave the Mustangs the lead, hitting a three-run home run. Ramona Fossum (Mescalero, NM/Mescalero Apache HS) extended the lead with a solo home run, giving the Mustangs a 5-2 lead.

Madeline Bleak (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View HS) blasted a solo home run in the 6th inning, putting the game out of reach and giving the Mustangs a 7-2 lead.

Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS) started for the Mustangs and threw a complete game. She is now (3-14) on the year. Her line went 7.0 IP, 97 H, 2 ER, 3 K and 1 BB. 

The Rambelles started Genesis Armendariz got the loss and is now (13-8) on the year. She went 5.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R (4 ER), 4 K and 1 BB. Torrey Hogan finished the game out throwing, 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER).

A. Lerma: 2-for-3, 1 R, 2 SB

L. Evans: 1-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB

B. Martinez: 1-for-3, 1 R

C. Jurado: 1-for-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI

R. Fossum: 1-for-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI

M. Bleak: 2-for-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI

GAME TWO:

Emily Maddux (Douglas, AZ/Douglas High School) got the start and the loss (0-9) after surrendering 2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 3 BB, and 1 HBP. 

ASU's Cheyenne Floyd threw a complete game, throwing 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 10 K, and 1 BB. She is now (5-4) on the year.

ASU's Lindsey Evans got the Rambelles on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning with a two-run home run. ASU led 2-0.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Cecy Jurado (El Monte, California/South El Monte High school) Doubled in a run. A couple batter later, Aryna Munoz hit a laser over the wall for a two-run home run, giving the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.

The Rambelles took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 3rd inning after Paxton Scheurer hit a two-run home run.

Continuing their momentum, ASU hit three home runs in the top of the 4th inning. Tatiana Trotter led the inning off with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Evans and Scheurer hit back-to-back home runs giving the Rambelles a 7-3 lead.

Headed to the top of the 5th inning, ASU's Ashton Dirner hit a solo home run extending the Rambelles lead to 8-3.

In the top of the 6th inning, Ashton McMillan reached on an error bringing in a run. Keilei Garcia also reached on an error, bringing in two more runners. ASU led 11-3.

P. Scheurer: 4-for-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB

L. Evans: 2-for-3, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB

A. Dirner: 2-for-4, 1 R, HR, 1 RBI

T. Trotter: 2-for-4, 1 R, HR, 1 RBI

Mustangs notable hitters: 

A. Munoz: 2-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI

C. Salazar: 2-for-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI

K. Jarrard: 1-for-3 

The Mustangs will look to take the series tomorrow against Angelo State at 12:00pm MST.
