Mustangs Late Inning Heroics Not Enough

SILVER CITY, N.M.- The Western New Mexico Softball team ended a three-game series with St. Edwards at The Yard on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs would fall to the Hilltoppers 6-4, thus giving St. Edward's the sweep of WNMU.

Kamerynn Cordova (Fowler, CA/Fowler HS) would receive the start for the Mustangs. Cordova would managed 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2 ER), 5 K, 1 BB. Jasmin Kirby (Surprise, AZ/State Farm Stadium HS) would pitch in relief of Cordova goining 2.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 K. Cassidy Paulson (Arvada, CO/Golden Colorado HS) would also get some time in the circle going 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB. Receiving the loss for the Mustangs is Emily Maddux (Douglas, AZ/Douglas High School). Maddux would go 1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, (1 ER). She is now (0-5).

The Mustangs would get started early, thanks to an error by the Hilltoppers. Cecy Jurado (El Monte, California/South El Monte High school) would reach on error, scoring Adlai Alvidrez (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at the end of the 1st Inning.

In the top of the 2nd Inning the Hilltoppers would reclaim the lead thanks to a double by Jordan Neely, scoring Lauren Hoyt and Ella Hutzler for a 2-1 lead. 

After the Hilltoppers gained the lead, the Mustangs would respond with a triple from speedster Ciara Salazar (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa HS), scoring Kennedy Jarrard (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad HS). This would tie the game up 2-2.

In the 3rd Inning the Mustangs would reclaim the lead thanks to a homerun from Jurado, 3-2.



In the 5th Inning the Hilltoppers bats would finally catch fire. Hutzler would single to left socring Jerzie Pelham to tie things up at 3-3. Aleixs Massie would follow things up with a single of her own, scoring Hutzler for the lead 4-3.

The Hilltoppers would continue scoring runs in the 6th Inning. Katie Dillon would single to center, scoring Hailey Sonka for a 5-3 lead. Pelham would continue the scoring for the Hilltoppers, hitting a sacrifice fly and scoring Dillon to extend the lead 6-3. 

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th Inning Alvidrez would reach on an error, scoring Reya Adkins (Benson, AZ/ASU Digital Prep) for the Mustangs. That would be all the Mustangs could get acorss the plate, falling 6-4.

Kylen Padget would get to start for the Hilltoppers, going 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R (1 ER). Renna Toomey would replace Padget is the 2nd Inning managing 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 K. Cadie Bell Currie would finish the game a recive the win. She is now (8-3). Currie would go 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

J. Neely: 2-for-4, 2 RBI
L. Hoyt: 2-for-3, 1 R
J. Pelham: 2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI

C. Salazar: 2-for-3, 1 RBI
C. Jurado: 2-for-4 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR
K. Jarrard: 1-for-2, 1 R 

The Mustangs will be back in action on March 17th against Texas A&M International (11:00 AM MT).
