Simon, Wright Drop 10 in Mustangs Loss

OKLAHOMA CITY Okla. – The Western New Mexico University Women's Basketball team traveled to Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles would defeat the Mustangs 68-53.

This puts the Mustangs at 8-16 (6-14).

Two Mustangs would manage double-figures on the Lions. Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) and Alina Simon (Killeen, TX/Ellison High School) would lead the charge for the Mustangs with 10 points each. Susi Namoa (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna High School) would add nine points for the Mustangs

Rebounding and the three-point shot would be the Mustangs undoing. The Eagles would manage to outrebound the Mustangs 46-32, including 21 offensive boards. WNMU would shoot 5-20 (25%) from deep, while the Eagles managed to shoot 9-20 (45%).

The Mustangs would also lose the turnover battle 21-15. This would lead the Eagles to score 30 points off Mustang turnovers.

At the charity stripe the Mustangs would manage a respectable 12-16 (75%), while the Eagles would shoot 15-20 (75%).

On the boards, Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) would snag seven rebounds. Namoa would contribute six rebounds. Delaney Cook (Peoria, IL/Peoria Notre Dame High School) would record three assists on the night.

In the defensive department, Cook would be good for two steals on the night. Four Mustangs would record a block.

In the first quarter WNMU would trade the lead back-and-forth with Eagles. The Eagles would muster the biggest lead at three points, but the Mustangs would take lead 18-17 after a Namoa three with 30 seconds left.

The second quarter would be where the Mustangs opened up their biggest lead of game of six points. WNMU would take a 31-27 advantage in the half.

Quarter number three is where the Mustangs would hold their final lead of the game, 41-39 with 2:49 left in the quarter. Free throws by Nakia Cullom would give the Eagles the lead and they would not look back, leading 46-42 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Eagles. WNMU would commit 10 of it's 21 TOs in the fourth quarter and the Eagles would take advantage, outscoring the Mustangs 22-11. That would be enough to put away the Mustangs 68-53.

Three Eagles would manage double-digits on the Mustangs. Brooklin Bain would score a game-high 15 points with eight rebounds. Kate Bradley would add 14 points. JaQuia White would chip in 10 points. Olivia Travis would record a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Mustangs will hit the road for their next match up against Eastern New Mexico on February 20th (5:30PM MT).
