PHOENIX, A.Z. – In Phoenix, AZ, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team won a nail-biter versus Colorado Mesa, 4-3.
"The girls went out there and took care of business," said Head Coach Jesus Baltazar. "We had great energy and executed well."
At No. 1 doubles Caini Wang (New Taipei City, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) and Kasja Gedlitschka took care of business, winning 6-3. No. 3 doubles with Willemijn Van Mierlo (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Calandlyceum) and Mann-Ning Li (Converse, TX/John H. Guyer HS) also won 6-4. No.1 duo partners, Jenny Larsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) had a close match before falling, 6-4.
Playing at the No. 6 spot, Gedlitschka gave the Mustangs another point, winning, 6-2, 6-1. Wang had a dominating performance, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-3. Locking down the No. 5 position, Li secured the win with a close 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Playing No. 1 singles, Larsson battled to the end, falling 6-1, 6-3. Van Mierlo, in the No. 2 position was edged out 6-4, 6-1. Playing in the No. 4 spot, Paredes lost in consecutive sets, 6-3, 6-3.
The Mustangs will play at home next Saturday (2/25), playing conference foe and former Head Coach Alex Hunt and the UTPB Falcons at 10:00am MST.
