Box Score GLENDALE, A.Z. – In Phoenix, AZ, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team was victorious at Paseo Racquet Club, defeating Arizona Christian, 5-2.
"We went out there and took care of business," said Head Coach Jesus Baltazar. "They definitely came out with the foot on the gas and didn't let up. I expect it to be the same tomorrow."
The Mustangs earned the doubles point after No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles won. Caini Wang (New Taipei City, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) and Kasja Gedlitschka won 6-0, and Willemijn Van Mierlo (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Calandlyceum) and Mann-Ning Li (Converse, TX/John H. Guyer HS) won 6-1. No.1 doubles with Jenny Larsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) had a tough outing, falling 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Paredes defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1. Following suit in the No. 4 spot, Van Mierlo won 6-1, 6-0. Li looked very strong in her match, winning 6-0, 6-0. Gedlitschka rounded out things with a solid 6-0, 6-4 win.
Playing No. 1 singles, Larsson battled before falling 6-4, 6-3. Wang fought to the end before being edged out 6-1, 6-4.
The Mustangs will play Colorado Mesa Friday at 11:15am, playing at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
