Silver City, NM – The Mustangs played their 2023 home season opener in Drags Court today against Arizona Christian University and took yet another victory to give the team a 4-0 winning streak this year. The team still remains undefeated.
The team scored a season record high of 92 points while holding the Firestorm to 65.
Brooke Rodgers (Phoenix, Arizona/Cactus Shadows High School) and
Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy) were today's top scorers as they both put up 15 points for the Mustangs.
Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School),
Jade Goynes (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley High School), and
Alina Simon (Killeen, TX/Ellison High School)s all scored in double figures as well.
Once again, the team looked heavily strong on defense as they grabbed 14 steals from ACU, one more than last week.
The primary key in today's win line up were their rebounding. Simon led the team in cleaning the glass as she grabbed 4 offensive boards and 6 defensive.
One spot the Mustangs struggled at in this matchup were turnovers, giving the ball up 18 times to the Firestorm.
After dominating at home for the first time this season, Coach
Josh Pace had this to say, "Our team loves playing at home and was very excited to have their first home game after being on the road for the first three games. It was good to have our fans seeing our hard work paying off. This game was a very good test as we prepare for our Lone Star Conference schedule."
Overall, the Mustangs earned the win right in the beginning of the game, shooting 80% FG, and 60% from deep. Although they only shot 50% from the line in the first quarter, they went 4-4 in the third to give the team a 75% free throw percentage.
The Mustangs outscored ACU in the 2
nd quarter, but only by 2 points. The biggest margin in point differential came from the 3
rd quarter, allowing the Firestorm to only score 13 and putting up 28 points in the process.
WNMU would later be outscored in the 4
th quarter, but not enough to take the win from the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will try to stretch their winning streak a little bit longer as they face St. Mary's University in their first season Conference play at home on Nov. 30.
