Mustangs Win Streak Continues at 3-0

Alpine, TX – Western New Mexico University took on Sul Ross State earlier today and left Alpine with yet another season win, giving the undefeated Mustangs a 3-0 start to the season.

Diamond Moore (Colorado Springs, CO/Harrison High School) once again scored in double figures for the Mustangs, racking up 18 points and shooting 9 for 11. Along with her, Sydney Wright (Houston, Texas/Henley High School) also found herself shooting comfortably as she scored 16 points for WNMU.

WNMU, again, shot a lower FT% percentage on the line against their opposing team, but outshot Sul Ross St. in FG by 1%.

The Lobos also had a higher percentage from the perimeter, hitting 50% in the 2nd half, while the Mustangs shot 34.8% from the arc.

Defensively, the team picked up 13 steals altogether as 9 out of the 10 suited players contributed to at least one each, and only allowed 13 turnovers to the Lobos the whole game.

After taking his 3rd game victory for 2023 as Head Coach, Josh Pace replied earlier with "Our team fought though some adversity today. On the Road against an up and coming team [Sul Ross St.] that will be in our conference next year. We gave up a solid lead and was able to win another close game at the end. We are learning how to win and it will help us in the Lone Star Conference."

Eliza Joynes (Adelaide, South Australia/Henley Sports Academy) led the team in glass cleaning today, grabbing 1 board on offense and 6 on defense. Nothing seemed to get past Joynes today as she also swatted the ball away from the Lobos on three separate shots.

At the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs outshot the Lobos from the arc by 16%, but would still end the quarter tied.

The second quarter went to the Mustangs as they took a late quarter lead, giving them a four point advantage over the Lobos.

WNMU outscored Sul Ross St. in the 3rd quarter as well, finally seprating a gap between the two teams.

Late in the fourth quarter though, the Lobos took a major point run to tie up the game once again. Although Sul Ross looked unstoppable in the last 3 min, it was not enough to hold the reins on the Mustangs and WNMU finished out the game with another season dub.

The Mustangs look to grab another season win to remain undefeated this Saturday at home against Arizona Christian University. It will be WNMU's home opener for the Women's basketball team.
