Mustangs Complete The Comeback

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University volleyball team hosted the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's University. The Mustangs came back from a 2-0 defect to win 3-2.
 
Senior Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) was a force on offense tonight with 19 kills. Maria Osorio (Pereira, Colombia/Calasanz) had 15 kills as well with a .367 hitting percentage. Letícia Correa had another 40+ assist night with 41 assists. Three Mustangs had two aces each.

Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) led the Mustangs on defense with 19 digs. Walker added 14 digs and Logan Dodge (Liberal, KS/Liberal Senior High School) had 11. Carley Deck (Tucson, AZ/Tanque Verde HS) and Osorio were forces up front with two total blocks each.
 
The Mustangs and Hilltoppers went back and forth, tied 10-10 in set one. WNMU led late 16-14, but the Hilltoppers settled in to take set one 25-17

In set two, the Mustangs jumped out quickly 7-2. After a hard-fought set, the Hilltoppers pulled through 25-17.

For set number three, the Mustangs and Hilltoppers traded points from get-go. With the Mustangs backs against the Mustangs prevailed 25-22.

For the fourth set, the Mustangs came out on a mission, leading 13-9. The Hilltoppers cut lead to one,16-17. This led the Mustangs to close out the set on a 8-3 run for a 25-19 set four win.

With both teams not giving up an inch, set five was underway. The Hilltoppers took the lead early 7-5. A quick timeout settled the Mustangs, as their come back began. Naomi Kimble (Animas, NM/Animas HS) and Walker became the catalysts in set five as the Mustangs took it 15-11.

The Mustangs hit the road next weekend for an in-state rivalry renewal against New Mexico Highland on October 18th (6:00 PM MT).
