Denton, Tex. – The Western New Mexico (WNMU) volleyball team was back in action on Friday September 9
th at Conference Challenge Weekend. The Mustangs would defeat the Midwestern State (MSU) Mustangs in four sets for their second win of the season.
Junior
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) was an offensive force tonight for WNMU, as she totaled a game-high 21 kills for the. Seniors
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) and Zoe Chatterton were not far behind Walker has they each add 16 kills of their own.
Senior
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was a big factor in Augustine, Walker and Chatterton's success has she recorded an outstanding 26 assists. Freshman
Peyton Castillo (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista HS) added an impressive 14 assists.
Walker and Augustine were not just offensive forces tonight. They also did the defensive dirty work and each recorded 20 digs respectively. Augustine and Chatterton also invited MSU you to their block party during the game, as Augustine finished with six blocks and Chatterton added four.
Set one started out with WNMU jumping out an early 13-8 lead on MSU. The Mustangs would ride that momentum until the end of the set, winning set one 25-17. WNMU 1, MSU 0.
In set two WNMU found themselves again with a hot start as they jumped out to an 11-5 advantage. MSU would manage to rally at the end but would drop the set 25-22. WNMU 2, MSU 0.
MSU would ride that momentum into set three and take an early 15-9 lead on WNMU. WNMU would be able to rally late and tie things up at 24. But back-to-back kills by Robyn White would give MSU the set, 26-24. WNMU 2, MSU 1.
Set four would be WNMU jumping out to a four-point lead and never letting that lead squander. WNMU would win set four 25-22 and take the match 3-1.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday September 10
th at Pioneer Hall and Kitty Magee Arena against Texas A&M International (12:00 PM MT) for their final game at Conference Challenge Weekend.
