Division I Abilene Christian Defeats Mustangs

ABILENE, TX. – Saturday night, the Western New Mexico University's football team is now (2-2)  after Division I Abilene Christian defeated the Mustangs 34-7, at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium.

The Mustangs pass rush was stellar tonight, having seven sacks. For the Mustangs was David Melendez (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HS) with 2.5 sacks. Tylen Coleman (Maricopa, AZ/Maricopa HS) had 2.0 sacks and Nazsir Mallory with 1.5.

Melendez and Jordan Davis () led the team with 7.0 tackles. Five Mustangs also totaled 6.0 tackles on the night.

Jamon Chambers (Tacoma, WA/Stadium HS) led the receiving corps with four catches for 34 yards. Charles Byers (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) had the sole touchdown, catching three passes for 26 yards.

The Mustangs Quarterback Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) passed for 165 yards, completing 21 of 44 attempts, and one touchdown, and one interception.

WNMU struck first, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Larsen connected with Charles Byers (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) for a 12 yard touchdown.

ACU would go on to score 34 unanswered points. The Wildcats first got on the board with a 44 yard field goal.

In the second quarter, ACU would score two touchdowns, both by Rovaughn Banks Jr. The Wildcats would lead 17-7 at halftime.

ACU continued to add on in the third quarter with a 25 yard field goal. In the fourth quarter Quarterback Ethan Long found Kobe Clark and Rece Stafford in the endzone. The Wildcats would go on to win 34-7.

ACU's Quarterback Ethan Long was 22-34 for 251 yards, and had two touchdowns. Banks Jr. and Jermiah Dobbins both had over 100 yards rushing. Banks Jr. had 143 yards and two touchdowns and Dobbins had 105 yards. Kobe Clark led all receivers with seven catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

The Mustangs will come home for homecoming against Midwestern State, next Saturday, at 6:00pm MDT. The game will also be streamed on the LSC Digital Network.
