FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Western New Mexico Volleyball team hit the road on Thursday September 23
rd for a match against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. The Lion home-court advantage would prove to be too much as they would sweep the Mustangs.
Senior
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) led the offense tonight with nine kills. Junior
Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) followed closely with seven. Walker would also record the Mustangs only aces on the night with two.
Freshman
Peyton Castillo (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista HS) was the teams lead "dimer" tonight as she recorded 13 assists. Senior
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was a close second finishing with 11 assists.
Walker would lead the defensive effort tonight, as she finished with 14 digs. Sophomores
Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) and
Vianey Lopez Marrufo (El Paso, TX/Del Valle HS) would tie for second and finish with 11 digs each.
Set one would start off with the Lions jumping out to an early 8-3 lead on the Mustangs. The Mustangs would be able to close the gap, but never take the lead, dropping set one 25-20. Lions 1, Mustangs 0.
In set two the Mustangs would be the aggressor and jump out to an 11-5 lead. The Lions would settle in and tie things up at 13 before pulling away. The Mustangs would lose set two 25-18. Lions 2, Mustangs 0.
The Lions would come out with an impressive swagger in set three. The Mustangs would quickly find themselves down 15-6. Arkansas Fort Smith would take set three 25-13, winning the match 3-0.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday September 24
th (11:00 AM MT) at Hamilton Field House when they take on Oklahoma Christian.
