Javelinas Defeat Mustangs in Four

Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico volleyball team was in action on Saturday September 17th against Texas A&M Kingsville at Drag's Court. The Mustangs would fall to the Javelinas in four sets 3-1, after winning set one.

Senior Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) recorded her 1,000 career kills against the Javelinas. Augustine entered the game only needing three kills for 1,000. She would finish with nine total. Junior Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) led the Mustang offense with 15 kills.

Senior Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) led the Mustangs in assists this afternoon with 23. Sophomore Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) was the defensive leader tonight as she finished with 18 digs.

Set one would start out with the Mustangs and Javelinas trading points back-and-forth. They would be tied 19-19 before the Mustangs would make their move. The Mustangs would take set one 25-23. Mustangs 1, Javelinas 0.

In set two the Javelinas would jump out to an early 9-7 lead on the Mustangs. From that point the Javelinas would go on to score 9 of the next 11 point. The Javelinas would dominate the Mustangs 25-10. Mustangs 1, Javelinas 1.

The Javelinas would take an early 10-4 lead on the Mustangs in set three. The Mustangs would rally late, but it would not be enough as the Javelinas would take set three 25-22. Javelinas 2, Mustangs 1.

Set four was another back-and-forth battle between the Javelinas and Mustangs. The Javelinas with the score tied at 18 would make their move and take set four 25-18, winning the match 3-1.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Friday September 23rd against Arkansas Fort Smith (5:00 PM MT) at Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
