Mustangs End Green Chile Classic with Loss

Silver City, NM – Saturday was the final day of volleyball matches for Western New Mexico University at the Green Chile Classic. The Mustangs hosted Holy Names University at Drag's Court. After four highly competitive sets the Mustangs fell to the Hawks.

Sophomore Jazmyne Walker (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy HS) (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy High School) controlled the Mustang offense tonight as she totaled 18 kills and a .277 hitting percentage. Veteran Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was hitting her hitters in stride as she totaled 27 assists. Freshman Peyton Castillo (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista HS) (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista High School) followed Culp with 20 assists.

Sophomore Janey Cortez (El Paso, TX/East Lake HS) (El Paso, TX/East Lake High School) was in control of the defense tonight as she came away with 27 digs.

The Mustangs started set one by taking a 15-9 lead over the Hawks. After settling in the Hawks would close the gap and trail 20-19, before the Mustangs found their grove and closed out the set 25-21.

Set two started with the Mustangs jumping out to a 5-2 lead over the Hawks. Then the Hawks settled in a stormed away with the lead. The Mustangs made a run at the end to close the gap but would ultimately lose the set 25-18.

In set three, it was deadlocked back and forth battle between the teams, with the Mustangs leading most of the way, being the first to 10 and 15. The Mustangs would end up losing the in close battle 25-23.

The fourth set was close early as the Hawks and Mustangs were tied 7-7 after 14 points. After the deadlock the Hawks took control of the set. The Mustangs made a late rally but would lose the set 25-23.

The Mustangs will be in action at Marcus Pavilion against Saint Martin's University (4:00PM MT) on Thursday September 1st to begin the Saint Martin's Invitational.
