Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Dakota Spillers

#53 St. Mary's Takes the Match Against Mustangs

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis teams competed against St. Mary's. Both the men and women were defeated 6-1. 

"We played a very good No. 53 ranked St. Mary's team," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "I credit Caini, she was playing well and stuck it out. Good things happen when you put in effort" 

In doubles, the Mustangs would lose three matches. The Mustangs No.1 team Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) fell 6-2. No. 2 doubles duo Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) lost 6-0. The Mustangs No. 3 team of Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) and Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) also lost 6-0.

In singles, Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) won her match after her opponent withdrew. Paredes fought hard before falling 6-2, 6-2. Playing in the No. 2 position, Gedlitschka played a tough opponet, as hse would fall 6-0, 6-2. 

Terrazas played nationally ranked No. 34 Maria Garcia before falling 6-0, 6-1. Leite played nationally ranked No. 28 Ashley Penshore, as Leite was defeated 6-2, 6-0. Gonzalez would put some pressure on her opponent losing 6-1, 6-3.

The Mustangs will go to Arkansas-Fort Smith, April 15th and Cameron, on April 16th. Both matches will begin at 10:00am MST.
