Road Trip Doesn't Go Mustangs Way Against UAFS and CU

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis teams played against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday and against Cameron on Saturday. Against UAFS they lost 6-1 and against CU they fell 7-0. They are now 6-12 on the year.

Match Versus UAFS

"We fought very hard but the result didn't favor us," said Head Coach Alex Hunt.

In doubles, the Mustangs would lose all three matches. The Mustangs No.1 team Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) played a great match before falling 7-5. No. 2 doubles duo Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) was close but fell 6-4. The Mustangs No. 3 team of Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) and Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) were edged 6-1.

"Emily had a huge win and is continuing to get better every week," said Hunt.

In singles, Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) had some grit in her match, winning 6-2 and 6-4. Leite split sets after winning the first set 7-6(6-2). Her opponent would win the next two 6-3 and 6-0. 

Terrazas fought hard before falling 7-6(8-6) and 6-2. Gedlitschka played hard as she was edged out 6-2, 6-1. Paredes was defeated by her opponent 6-3, 6-2. Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) got the nod in the  No. 6 position, as she would be defeated 6-0, 6-3.

Match Versus CU

On Saturday, April 16th, No. 10 nationally ranked Cameron, who defeated the Mustangs 7-0. 

"Cameron is a very good team at No. 10 in the nation and we fought hard," said Hunt. 

In doubles, the Mustangs would lose all three matches. No. 2 doubles duo of Gedlitschka and Leite battled but fell 6-3. The Mustangs No.1 team of  Terrazas and Paredes and No. 3 Gonzalez and Wang were downed 6-0.

In singles, Leite played a tough opponent of No. 55 Vasilisa Polunova. Polunova went on to win 6-1, 6-3. Playing No. 50 Anastasia Uspenskaia, Gedlitschka was defeated 6-1, 6-2.

Terrazas and Paredes both battled their opponents before falling 6-3 and 6-0. Wang and Arnautu both had tough matches as they fell 6-1, 6-1.

The Mustangs women have three more matches of the regular season. They will go to UT Permian Basin on Friday, April 22nd, to Angelo State on Saturday, April 23rd, and then Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sunday, April 23rd!
