Box Score San Angelo, TX – The Western New Mexico University Women's tennis team played against No. 24 Angelo State. The Mustangs were defeated 7-0.
"We played a very good No. 24 ranked Angelo State team," said Head Coach Alex Hunt.
In doubles, ASU would take the point. The Mustangs No.1 team Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) fell 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, duo Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) were defeated 6-2. The Mustangs No. 3 team of Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) and Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) also lost 6-1.
"We competed hard in singles. Even though the results don't show, the women gained confidence as they played," said Hunt.
In singles, Gedlitschka fell in a hard fought match 6-4, 6-2. Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) played a tough match before her opponent won 6-4, 6-1. Terrazas came back strong after a tough first match. She would be edged out 6-1, 6-4.
Paredes started off with a 6-0 loss but would force a tiebreaker before being edged out 7-6(3). Leite would play the No. 10 ranked girl in the nation, as she would fall in consecutive sets at 6-1. Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) played in the 6th spot and would fall 6-1, 6-0.
The Mustangs will travel to play Texas A&M-Kingsville tomorrow. First serve will start at 10:00am MST.
