Women's Tennis Dominates Letourneau Despite a Loss Against UTT

Tyler, TX – The Western New Mexico University Women's tennis team geared up to play a doubleheader, one match against University of Texas at Tyler and the other against LeTourneau University, Friday morning. The team would go on to split with a record of 1-1 for the day. 

"It was a good day overall because we competed very hard today," stated Head Coach Alex Hunt

Match vs UTT:

In doubles, the Mustangs lost the point as the University of Texas at Tyler Patriots won each match, (6-2, 6-0, 6-1). 

In singles play, the Patriots continued their momentum and defeated the Mustangs 7-0. Singles Number One, Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) fought hard but came up short falling (1-6, 0-6 [1]). Number Two singles, Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS), was also defeated (0-6, 1-6 [2]). Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) competed against her opponent in a (0-6, 1-6 [3]) loss. Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) came close in Singles match Number Four in the second set (1-6, 4-6 [4]).

Singles match Number Five showed strong determination from Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) taking a set from her opponent (6-0, 4-6, 5-10 [5]). Nicold Gonzales would wrap up singles play falling (6-0, 6-0 [6]) for Singles match Number Six. 

Match vs Letourneau:

"We did well, we won all three doubles matches including five out of the six singles matches," stated Hunt. 

In doubles play, the Mustang swept Letourneau 3-0. Doubles team Number One, Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) and Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) started the energy for the Mustangs with a (8-4) win, followed by Doubles team Number Two, Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) and Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) with a (8-2) defeat over their opponents. Doubles team Number Three, Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) dominated in a (8-1) win. 

Carrying that momentum over to singles play, Singles match Number One, Leite defeated Letourneau (6-2, 6-1 [1]). In a close Singles match Number Two, Gedlitschka was just short of taking the win for the match (4-6, 5-7 [2]). Terrazas won the Singles match Number Three for the Mustangs (6-3, 6-3 [3]) clinching another win for the team. Wang helped the team earn the Singles match Number Four point (6-1, 6-3 [4]). 

Singles match Number Five, Paredes controlled the win in both sets (6-0, 6-1 [5]), followed by Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) securing the final win for the Mustangs in Singles match Number Six, (6-1. 6-0 [6]). 

The Mustangs will be back on their home courts April 9th, starting at doubles play at 1:00 pm MT.
