Mustangs Use Long Ball But Fall in Doubleheader

Silver City, N.M. - Friday afternoon, Western New Mexico University Softball played Texas A&M International before falling 8-3 and 5-3. 

Game One:

Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) had the hot bat in game one, bringing in all three Mustang runners after hitting two homeruns. Munoz was the only Mustang to bring in runners. WNMU as a team had seven hits.

Munoz started the first inning off with a solo homerun to right field. In the 7th inning she would blast a two-run homerun.

In the 2nd inning, TAMIU had seven runs on five hits. They would also hit two homeruns in the inning. The Dustdevils would then lead 7-1.

In the 5th inning, the Dustdevils would single in a run, giving them a 8-1 lead.

The Mustangs began to fight back in 7th after Munoz hit her two-run homerun but it would end there.

The Dustdevils started with Darrian Smith who is now (9-7) on the year. She would pitch 4.0 IP, 3 H, (1 ER), 6 K, and 2 BB. Sara Papizan came into pitch in the 5th inning, going 2.0 IP, 2 H, and 3 K. Victoria Gonzalez closed out the game throwing 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 K, and 1 BB.

The Mustangs started Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School). She pitched 1.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R (3 ER), 1 BB, and 1 HBP. Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) would come in to pitch, going 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R (0 ER), and 3 K. 

TAMIU had 9 total hits with two hits being homeruns. 

Dustdevils notable hitters:

Alex Hernandez: 2-for-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, BB

Briana Arredondo: 3-for-4, HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

Victoria Gonzalez: 1-for-2, HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

B. Munoz: 3-for-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI

Game Two:

WNMU's Breeanna Simmons (Chula Vista, CA/Olympian High School) led the Mustang hitters in game two with hits and a homerun. The Mustangs ended game two with nine hits.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) got the start for WNMU. She pitched 6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R (4 ER), 3 K and 1 BB. 

The Dustdevils got up early, scoring three runs on three hits in the 1st inning.

TAMIU added a run in the 5th inning off a double, giving them a 4-0 lead.

In the 6th inning, Simmons would drive her 7th homerun of the year, bringing in B. Munoz. Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) would later step up to the plate and hit an RBI double. WNMU trailed 4-3.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, TAMIU extended their lead to 5-3 after an RBI single.

TAMIU's starting pitcher, Carla Arellano is now (1-5). She pitched 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 K, and 1 BB.

Dustdevil's notable hitters:

Briana Arredondo: 3-for-3, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI

Victoria Gonzalez: 2-for-3, 2B, 1 RBI

M. Garcia: 2B, 1 RBI

On Saturday, the Mustangs will play Texas A&M-International at 11:00am MT. On Sunday,the Mustangs will play Texas A&M-Kingsville for a doubleheader playing at 11:00am and 1:00pm MT.
