#14 Lubbock Christian Gets Past Mustangs in Doubleheader

Silver City, N.M. - Friday afternoon, Western New Mexico University Softball took on the No. 14 Lubbock Christian for a LSC matchup. LCU would win both games defeating the Mustangs 14-0 and 10-4.

Game One:

The Chaparrals got up early and continued to add on throughout the first four innings. 

Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) got the start for WNMU. She pitched 3.1 IP, 10 H, 12 R (11 ER), 1 K, 1 BB and 1 HBP. Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) closed it out, where she pitched 1.2 IP, 4H, 1 R, and 1 BB. 

The Chaps got on the board first in the 1st inning, with a two-run home run. In the 2nd inning, LCU scored a run on three hits and would lead 3-0.

In the 3rd inning, the LCU put up four runs. Three runs came from a three-run home run from Skylar Herrera, as LCU would lead 7-0.

The Chaps continued their momentum and put up seven runs on six hits. Two of the hits were doubles. LCU led 14-0.

LCU's starting pitcher, Taylor Franco is now (12-1). She pitched a complete game shutout 5.0 IP, 1 H, and 6 K.

LCU's notable hitters:

Brooke Makemsom: 3-for-4, HR 2 R, 3 RBI

Savannah Wysocki: 2-for-2, 2B, 2 R, BB, SB

Tyla Lee: 2-for-4, 1 R

Game Two:

The Mustangs and Chaparrals had an offensive battle for most of the game. The Mustangs would blast two home runs but it wasn't enough to take down No. 14 ranked Lubbock Christian.

The Chaps would strike first in the 1st inning with a sacrifice fly. They would lead 1-0 until WNMU's Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) would turn on an inside pitch, hitting a two-run home run. The Mustangs would lead 2-1.

In the 2nd inning, LCU's Athena Muniz would hit a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2.

In the 4th inning, LCU would grab a 5-2 lead, bringing in three runs off three hits. The Mustangs also walked two batters in the inning.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Breeanna Simmons (Chula Vista, CA/Olympian High School) stepped up to the plate and smacked a line drive home run over the left-center fence, cutting the Chaps lead to 5-3.

Continuing to add to their score in the 5th inning, LCU extended their lead to 7-3, after a two-run home run from Herrera. 

In the bottom of 5th inning, WNMU's Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) would single in a run, making the score 7-4.

In the top of the 7th inning, the Chaps scored three more runs from two doubles and an error. LCU led 10-4 going into the bottom of the 7th.

The Chaparrals started with Maxine Valdez. She would get the no decision after pitching 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 K, and 1 BB. Mattye Taylor would get the win and is now (4-10). Her line goes 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, and 1 K. Taylor Franco earned the save as she came into the game with the batter as the tying run at the plate. Her line goes 2.1 IP, 1 H, and 1 K.

The Mustangs started Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School), as she would pitch a complete game. She pitched 7.0 IP, 9 H, 10 R (9 ER), and 4 K. She is now (1-1) on the year.

LCU had 9 total hits with four being extra-base hits. They also had six stolen bases, three of which came from Savannah Wysocki.

The Mustangs will play Sunday, March 20th, against #17 Angelo State. First pitch will be at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
