Box Score Colorado Springs, CO – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team played Colorado College this afternoon. The women were defeated 5-4.
"We had several matches that came down to the wire that just went Colorado College's way," said Assistant Coach Griffin Weinkam.
In doubles, the Mustangs lost the doubles point. No. 2 doubles duo Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) and Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) won 8-1. The Mustangs No.1 team Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) were going back and forth until CC's No. 1 double team won 8-7(7-5). The Mustangs No.3 team Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) and Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) had a tough time as they were defeated 8-3.
In singles, playing in the No. 2 position, Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) had a great outing winning 6-3, 6-3. Wang also defeated her opponent in consecutive sets 6-0, 6-2. The final Mustang to win a match was Gonzales but she had to fight for it. She lost the first set 7-5 but would win the next two sets 6-3 and 10-6.
"Julia and Emily came out with great energy and  the results showed" said Weinkam.
Going three sets, Arnautu got down early losing the first set 6-0 but would win the second set 6-4. She would lose the third set 11-9. Paredes played a good match before falling 7-5, 6-4. Leite battled in the No. 1 spot before falling 6-4, 6-2.
The Mustangs will head to Metro State of Denver on Monday and then will play Seward County Community College. The Mustang Men will then play Colorado Mesa on Tuesday before they head back to New Mexico.
