Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team played Sul Ross State this afternoon. Both the men and women went on to win 7-0.
"Knowing there was going to be strong wind today, we preached high first serve percentage and quality returns. We did just that and the results showed," said Head Coach Alex Hunt.Â
Women's Match:
In doubles, the Mustangs secured the point winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles was won on a forfeit as the SRSU only had four players. Duos tandems, Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS), and Caini Wang and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) won 6-0.
In singles, Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Parades had a great outing winning 6-0, 6-1. Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) and Wang both defeated their opponents 6-1, 6-0. Â
Men's Match:Â
All day the Mustangs only lost one game. That one set came in doubles. Joaquin Delpino and Yu Jhe Du played at No. 1 doubles and won 6-1. No. 2 doubles, Patricio Larrea and Brendan Lock and No. 3 doubles, Javier Romero and Lorenzo Orellano won 6-0.
In singles, Delpino and Romero had a strong showing, defeating their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Continuing the overall great play, Du and Larrea won 6-0, 6-0. Lock had a very entertaining match but would wind up winning 6-0, 6-0. Clinching the match was Orellano, as he would win 6-0, 6-0.
"Today was a good win and I am proud of them. Next week will be a great week for us in Colorado" Concluded Hunt.
Both tennis teams will spend their spring break playing Colorado. Sunday, March 13th, the Mustangs play at Colorado College, will head to Metro State of Denver on Monday, play Seward County Community College right after, and then play Colorado Mesa on Tuesday before heading back.
