TAMIU Spoils Last Home Game of the Year

Silver City, NM - Monday night was the last home game at Drag's Court for the Western New Mexico University's Men's Basketball team. The Mustangs played a make-up game versus Texas A&M-International. TAMIU would go on to win 72-68.

The Mustangs would score in double-figures. Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) led all scorers with 19pts, followed by Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS) with 12pts, and Malik Johnson (Wytheville, Virginia/George Wythe High School) with 10pts

For most of the game, it was a back-and-forth battle, having 15 different lead changes. The Mustangs went into the half leading 31-30.   

In the first half the WNMU shot 44.0% (11-25), 45.5% from three (5-11), and was 4-4 at the free throw line. 

In the second half, the Mustangs offense began to force shots. WNMU ended up shooting 39.2% (20-51), 36.8% from three (7-19), and 87.5% (21-24) from the free throw line.

TAMIU rebounded the ball well, having 31 compared to the Mustangs 28. The Dustdevils had seven offensive rebounds, scoring 10 second chance points. WNMU had six offensive rebounds and converted 12 second chance points.

Both teams did well handling the ball, only turning the ball over eight times. The Mustangs would get 8pts off of turnovers, as for TAMIU only had 2pts. 

Fouls weren't a huge issue for either team. Both teams totaled 16 fouls and both teams made the most of their opportunities at the free throw line. TAMIU went 16-18 and the Mustangs were 21-24.
