Mustangs Sweep Howard Payne 9-0

Brownwood, TX – The Western New Mexico University Women's Tennis team swept the Howard Payne Jackets in an incredible 9-0 sweep. The Mustangs did not drop a single set in any of the matches against the Jackets.

"The challenge for us today was to stay disciplined and to take care of what we needed to take care of," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "We were determined to now allow any momentum to be given to Howard Payne and we were able to do just that."

Howard Payne was unable to fulfill the sixth member of their team, so they were forced to forfeit two matches. The Mustangs went into the match already ahead 2-0.

For the doubles point, Mustangs were already awarded one of the three match wins, but that did not interfere with how the team would play. Immediately, duo Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) went in and secured the doubles point 8-2. Doubles match Number Two was a dominating win from Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) ans Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School)

In the singles play, every Mustangs, within all five matches, took a set with a 6-0 win. Singles Number One, Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) would go on to win [6-0,6-1(1)] setting the tone for the rest of the girls. Singles match Number Two, showed great effort from Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) with a [6-1, 6-0(20} win. Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) would go on to defeat her opponent [6-1, 6-0(3)] in the third singles match. Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) defeated Howard Payne [6-0, 6-2(4)] followed by the final win from Andreea Arnatu [6-1, 6-0(5)].

"We were able to keep the energy on our side for the entire 2.5-3 hours which made it such a great match," concluded Hunt.

The Mustangs will be back in action on March 10th, at their very own courts to play against Sul Rose State University at 10am.
