Brownwood, TX – The Western New Mexico University Men's Tennis team took a full control over their match outcomes this weekend. The Mustangs geared up to play against the Howard Payne Jackets only to dominate in an incredible 9-0 sweep. The Mustangs did not drop a single set in any of the matches against the Jackets.
"We stayed very discipline today which was our main focus on the day," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "The team was told to keep the positive energy on our side and we were able to do so the entire time and I consider that a huge success."
Mustangs took charge of the doubles point against the Jackets starting with junior Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and freshman Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School). The duo went out with a 8-2 win immediately after setting foot on their court. Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) were also able to pull of a 8-2 win followed by the team of Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Lorenzo Orellano with a 8-1 win the capitalize on the winning the doubles point.
As far as the singles, the Mustangs did not allow any of the Jackets to gain momentum of any kind. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) started with a magnificent 6-0 win during both of his sets. Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) would win the singles match Number Two [6-4, 6-3(2)]. Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) took a victory with an outstanding 6-0 win during both sets. Sophomore Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) came out ready to play winning [6-1, 6-3(3)]. Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) defeated his opponent [6-0, 6-1(5)] followed by teammate Lorenzo Orellano with a [6-2,6-2(6)] win.
The Mustangs will be back in action on March 10th, at their very own courts to play against Sul Rose State University at 10am.
