Abilene, TX– The Western New Mexico University Women's tennis team began their busy weekend with a double header day against Hardin Simmons University and McMurry University. The Mustangs would go onto split the day taking a loss to Hardin Simmons but a huge win against McMurry. 

"We went right on the court against McMurry and our girls flipped the script following the match against Hardin Simmons," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "The team came really came together to get a great win."

vs Hardin Simmons University:

In doubles, Hardin Simmons would take the point 3-0. Number One and Two doubles matches were close but the team was unable to get their momentum going early enough. In the singles match, Mustangs would win two out of the six matches. Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) came out strong and quickly defeated her opponent [6-2,6-0(1)] to give the Mustangs a great confidence boost in match Number One. Singles match Number Three, Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) also pulled an aggressive sweep [6-1, 6-2(30] for the Mustangs. Unfortunatly, Hardin Simmons came out on top in the singles match winning 4, and defeating WNMU 7-2 at the end of the day. 

vs McMurry University:

In the doubles, WNMU dominated McMurry with a 3-0 sweep and tremendous team effort. Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) won 8-7 for match Number One. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) dominated match Number two with a 8-2 win followed by a win from Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) earning 8-1. In the singles match play, the Mustangs won all six games besides singles match Number Three. Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) would wrap up and secure the win for WNMU with a dominating final win [6-4, 6-0(6)]. 
 

Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday February 19th to play against Howard Payne University at 10am.
