Box Score Phoenix, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team continued their on-the-road weekend to play against Ottawa University Arizona. The Mustangs Women's Tennis team would fall to OUAZ 5-2, but not without going down without a fight.
"One thing that was really exciting is that we were able to take a doubles win from a very talented Women's program," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "Our number one team won 6-0 which is such a huge win."
In doubles, the Mustangs earned the point. The Mustangs would go in sweeping the Spirit 6-0 to begin the match. The number three double team would finish the job without hesitation. Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) and Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) would take the doubles win 6-3.
The Mustangs went into the singles matches up 1-0. OUAZ singles came out swining extremely strong and aggressive taking the first five singles matches from the Mustangs. However, the fifth singles match, Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School), did not allow the Spirit to defeat her so easily as she held her own to drive the match to three sets. In the sixth single match, Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) fought back with determination and took the win from OUAZ [7-6, 4-6(6)].
"Nicold played well as she showed grit, and really did what she needed to do to secure a win," concluded Hunt.
