Denton, TX - The Western New Mexico University Mustangs stepped foot at Kitty Magee Arena to play against the Texas Woman's University Pioneers, Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs were unable to establish an effective offensive plan and were defeated by the Pioneers.
Sophomore
Olivia Lee (Peoria, AZ/Cactus HS) lead the Mustangs in points and rebounds earning a double-double on the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She shot a high 75% from the field goal range helping the Mustangs earn points on the board. Junior
Zyan Smith (Queen Creek, AZ/Mesquite High School ) earned 7 points for the afternoon followed by sophomore
Myla Lee (Glendale, AZ/Cactus HS) with 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Defensively, the Mustangs would out beat the Pioneers in blocks as the team earned 6 compared to TWU with 0. Aggressive play would cost the Mustangs fouls that gave the Pioneers the opportunity to make baskets. Texas Woman's capitalized on the opportunity for free throws making 66.7% of the 18 free throws allowed.
Offensively, the Pioneers also seemed to hae a rough time finding the net as the team shot 31% from the field goal range and 38.5% from the three-point line. The Mustangs shot 27.5% from the field goal range and 25% from the three point range. Points from the bench on the Mustang side of the court would account for more than half of the total team points (18 points and 35 total points). Although WNMU was defeated, it seems that the team was beat based on three-pointers from the Pioneers who only had 10 points made from in the paint whereas the Mustangs, had 20 points in the paint. The final score for the match up was WNMU 35, Pioneers 53.
The Mustangs will head back to Drag's Court for their final home weekend of the season, including the Saturday game that will honor the seniors that will not be returning.
