Mustangs Fall 6-1 To Mavericks

Surprise, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team played Colorado Mesa at a neutral site in Surprise, AZ. The women lost a very close 6-1 match.

In doubles, the Mavericks secured the point winning in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) won their duos match but it was a close 7-6 (9-7).

"Kajsa and Livia played some clutch tennis and made some aggressive moves, especially in situations tight situations" said Head Coach Alex Hunt.

In singles, Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) was the only Mustang to pull out the win. She would lose the first set 6-4, but battle back, winning the next two sets to win the match (6-1, 6-2).

"We split four sets against a very talented team and came out with one strong win" said Hunt. "Livia continues to play at very high level and will continue to keep growing as the season goes along."

Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School),  Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS), and Gedlitschka both split sets in their match. Wang would have a great first set winning 6-2, but would fall the next two sets (7-5, 6-2). Terrazas lost the first set 6-2, gained momentum in the second set winning 7-5, but her opponent would finish the match winning 6-1. Gedlitschka won the first set 7-5, but would be edged out the next two (6-4, 6-0).

Playing some tough talent, Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) would fall to their opponents. Arnautu was defeated (6-3, 6-3) and CMU's Paige Furin took the point over Gonzalez winning (6-1, 6-2).

"We played with great competitiveness and the last 10% just got away from us" concluded Hunt.

Both tennis teams look to end the weekend on a high note, playing Ottawa (AZ) on Saturday, with first serve starting at 4:00pm!
