Box Score Glendale, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team hit the road for different matches. The Mustangs first match of the weekend comes against Arizona Christian, where the Mustangs Women's Tennis team would defeat the Firestorm 6-1.
"We started off slow in the first doubles match but doubles No. 2 and No. 3 really picked it up and performed well," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "Our momentum from doubles carried on to singles and the women played immaculate."
In doubles, the Mustangs earned the point. It started off going the Firestorm way after the Mustangs No. 1 duos fell 6-4. The Mustangs' other two teams were not phased. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) would win the second duos match 6-4 and the third duos team, Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) and Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School), would sweep the match 6-0.Â
In singles, Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Saint George HS) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) would defeat their opponents (6-1, 6-0). Caini Wang (Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) dominated, winning her match (6-0, 6-0). Livia Letie played well, battling throughout her match before eliminating her opponent [6-3, 7-6(4)]. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) split sets, and would fight to win her third set to secure the point, going (3-6, 6-4, 10-4). Despite falling in her match (6-2, 6-4), Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) played very well against the Firestorm's No. 1.Â
"The women played very well all day and we need to continue that against a good Colorado Mesa team" concluded Hunt.
Both tennis are back on the court tomorrow, playing Colorado Mesa with first serve starting at 4:00pm!
