Mustangs Fall to D1 Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball team finished up their finish exhibition schedule with a matchup against the University of New Mexico. The Lobos would ride a strong first half to defeat the Mustangs 102-63.

Four Mustangs managed to score in double-digits tonight. Dane Quest (Ontario, Canada/) led the Mustangs tonight with a season-high 17 points on 7-12 from the field. Andres Andrade Rossi (Gran Canaria, Canary Island, Spain/The Phelps School) also scored a season-high 15 points including going 2-2 from behind the arc. Joshuwan Johnson (Phoenix, AZ/Maricopa High School) added 11 points including three triples. Keith Littles (Augusta, GA/) chipped in 10 points.

The disparity in free throws and rebounding would prove to be the difference for the Mustangs. The Lobos would out rebound the Mustangs 52-35. UNM would shoot 21-28 (75%) from the free throw line compared to the Mustangs 14-28 (50%).

The Mustangs would also get destroyed in the paint 48-26.

WNMU would however win the three-point battle over the Lobos. The Mustangs managed to shoot 7-19 (37%) compared to the Lobos 5-19 (26%).

On the glass Quest led the Mustangs with seven boards. Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) would add five rebounds as well. Five Mustangs would finish with two assists. Jaylin McFadden (Rockford, IL/) would managed to pick the Lobos' pockets twice for two steals.

In the first half the Mustangs would shoot a dreadful 29% from the field and 29% from behind the arc. WNMU would finish the game shooting 32% from the field and 39% from three-point range. The Lobos managed to shoot 54% from the field and 26% from three.

After a big first by the Lobos, the Mustangs would go into halftime trailing 49-20. The second half treated the Mustangs much better as the Lobos would outscore them 53-43, thus winning the game 102-63.

Five Lobos managed double figures on the Mustangs. Morris Udeze scored a game-high 18 points with six rebound and three blocks. Jamal Mashburn, Jr. added 17 points. Donovan Dent chipped in 12 points and seven assists. Birima Seck and KJ Jenkins both would score 11 points each. Josiah Allick would pull down 13 rebounds on the Mustangs.
