No. 22 TAMUK Defeats Mustangs, 21-17

KINGSVILLE, TX – Saturday night, at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium, the Western New Mexico University's football team was defeated by No. 22 Texas A&M Kingsville 21-17. 

The Mustangs came out hot in the first half scoring all 17 points. The Javelinas would not get down and continue to answer back.

The Mustangs Quarterback Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) passed for 296 yards, completing 33 of 53 attempts, and two touchdowns, and an interception.

David Telles (Los Angeles, CA/Franklin HS) led the team with 10 catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Tobi Sonaike (Belle Mead, NJ/Oak Hill Academy) had a huge game with 11 catches for 100 yards. Jamon Chambers (Tacoma, WA/Stadium HS) also had five catches for 28 yards and a touchdown..

Logan Lucero led the defense with nine tackles. LJ Vongsy (Aiea, HI/Aiea HS) had six and Sam Moala (Reno, NV/Hug HS) had five, including a sack. Kenny White (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland HS) nabbed his first interception of the year.

The Mustangs found paydirt first with Larsen connecting to Telles for 17 yards. Next Mustangs possession, Larsen found Chambers for 14 yards, giving the Mustangs 14-0 lead.

TAMUK then came marching down the field. Christian Anderson had a five yard touchdown run, cutting the Mustang lead to 14-7. 

The Javelinas continued their momentum scoring a long touchdown. Jacob Cavazos found Jason Gaines for 69 yards and tied the game up at 14-14.

The Mustangs kicked a field goal with 4:04 left in the first half, retaking the lead 17-14.

The Javelinas took the lead with Anderson rushing for 28 yards. TAMUK went on to win the game 21-17.

TAMUK's Quarterback Jacob Cavazos was 10-26 for 176 yards, and had one touchdown and one interception. On the ground, Christian Anderson had 16 rushes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Toniel Carter also rushed 23 times for 113 yards. Jason Gaines had five receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown.

Next Saturday, the Mustangs will be back home for the Pink Out game versus #3 Angelo State. Kickoff will be at 12:00pm MDT. The game will also be streamed on the LSC Digital Network.
