Football Runs Past Simon Fraser

BURNABY, CANADA – Saturday night, at SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field, the Western New Mexico University's football team defeated Simon Fraser 38-14.

The Mustangs defense played very well. They had four takeaways and stopped SFU twice deep in Mustang territory. Both stops would end with the Mustangs grabbing two interceptions.

The Mustangs ended up with three interceptions on the night. Dedric Luton (Florida City, FL/Homestead HS) snagged his first of the year. Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) had the second interception of the game. Xavier Pulea (Lakewood, WA/Clover Park HS) had the third interception. Four different Mustangs also had a pass breakup.

Kenny White (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland HS) led the team with 10 tackles. Cauy Oropeza (El Paso, TX/Del Valle HS) and LJ Longsy had a nose for the ball, totaling seven tackles. Sam Moala (Reno, NV/Hug HS) had 2.0 sacks, Wallen Te'o (Honolulu, HI/St. Louis HS) had 1.5, Devin Graham (Yuma, AZ/Gila Ridge HS) had two 0.5 sacks, and Dominick Sanchez (Downey, CA/Warren HS) had a 0.5 sack.

The Mustangs also had four turnovers including three fumbles by three different players.

The Mustangs Quarterback Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) passed for 211 yards, completing 21-30, two touchdowns, had a fumble, and an interception. David Telles (Los Angeles, CA/Franklin HS) and Charles Byers (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) led the team with four catches. Byers had 57 yards and a touchdown. Dejonte Thomas (Carson, CA/Carson HS) also had a touchdown with his two catches for 37 yards.

The ground game was great for the Mustangs. Larsen led the team in rushing with 80 yards. Maurice Smith () had 59 yards. Eddie Tillman III (New Orleans, LA) had 55 yards. Devin "Groove" Moore had 28 yards and a touchdown. Jamon Chambers (Tacoma, WA/Stadium HS) had 13 yards and a touchdown as well.

The Mustangs got on the board first after the Dedric Luton (Florida City, FL/Homestead HS) interception. Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) then rushed for a 54 yard touchdown.

The next offensive play for SFU, Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) nabbed an interception. The Mustangs would capitalize with a Jamon Chambers (Tacoma, WA/Stadium HS) six yard rush and score. The Mustangs would lead 14-0.

Next Mustang possession, Larsen threw a 35 yard touchdown to Dejonte Thomas (Carson, CA/Carson HS). WNMU led 21-0.

SFU then got the ball and drove the field. 3rd and goal on the two yard line, the Mustangs got their third interception in the end zone by Xavier Pulea (Lakewood, WA/Clover Park HS).

The Mustangs marched down the field next possession and ended with a Maurice Smith () touchdown. WNMU extended their lead to 28-0.

The Mustangs kicked a field goal next possession and would take a 31-0 lead.

SFU got on the board right before half with a one yard touchdown pass. SFU would miss the extra point and make the score 31-6.

To start the second half, the Mustangs had a great return. Two plays later, Larsen found Charles Byers (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) for 44 yards and extended the lead to 38-6.

SFU capitalizes on the Mustangs fumbles and scores a touchdown. SFU would convert on the two-point conversion. 

In the fourth quarter, SFU rushed for another touchdown. The Red Leafs cut the lead to 38-21.

SFU's Quarterback Justin Seiber was 15-21 for 171 yards, had two touchdowns and three interceptions. Aidan Pearce led SFU in receiving with five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Somto Anyadike had 16 rushes for 74 yards. Key-Shaun Dorsey had four rushes for 32 yards and a touchdown.

October 29nd, the Mustangs will be back home for Senior Day and the final home game of the year, playing against West Texas. Kickoff will be at 12:00pm MDT. The game will also be streamed on the LSC Digital Network.
