Silver City, N.M. - The Western New Mexico University volleyball team was in action at Drag's Court against The University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday Oct. 1st. The Mustangs would lose the game in three sets to the Patriots.
Senior
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) was the leader on offense tonight as she had a game-high 11 kills. Augustine would not only be the leader on offense, but also the defense's leader in digs with 11.
Sophomore
Vianey Lopez Marrufo (El Paso, TX/Del Valle HS) would record a game-high four aces on the afternoon. Senior
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) did her job spreading the ball around on offense tonight, as she finished with 13 assists. Freshman
Peyton Castillo (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista HS) would follow Culp behind closely with 12 assists.
To start off the match, the Patriots would run out to a commanding 18-6 lead on the Mustangs. The Mustangs would rally late but it would not be enough and they would lose the set 25-18.
Patriots 1, Mustangs 0.
In set two the Patriots would again start off with a big lead on the Mustangs, 18-7. The Patriots would not take their foot off the gas in set two, defeating the Mustangs 25-14.
Patriots 2, Mustangs 0.
Set three would be a better startg for the Mustangs, rallying out to a 14-10 lead on the Patriots. The Patriots would rally late and take set three 25-23, taking the match 3-0.
The Mustangs will be back in action at Drag's Court on Monday Oct. 3 agaisnt UT Permian Basin (6:00PM MT).
The Mustangs net competition will be in January 2023, playing against New Mexico State.
