Volleyball Battles in Four Against West Texas A&M.

Canyon, TX– The Mustangs of Western New Mexico University Volleyball were matched up against West Texas A&M in a four-set match where the Mustangs were unable to finish leaving Buffaloes with a 3-1.

"We showed a lot of heart today. After a rough first two sets, we took advantage of their lineup changes taking the third set," said Head Coach Holly Watts

Senior Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) lead the Mustang offense with 13 kills for the afternoon and also earning an ace. She also lead the Mustang defense in digs with 10 during the match-up. Freshman Kayla Judd (St. David, AZ/St. David HS) had a great night with 7 kills and 5 blocks helping the offense tremendously. "In the toughness of it al, we saw Kayla Judd (St. David, AZ/St. David HS) step up in the middle and with several outside attackers that put together streaks of playing very well on both sides of the ball," noted Coach Watts.

Senior Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) lead the Mustangs in assists with 22 for the night followed by Freshman Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) with 12 for the match.

"West Texas is a perennial team in the LSC and the challenge showed a lot of character for our young team," concluded Coach Watts.

In four matches, the Mustangs were unable to finish to take the road match from the Buffaloes. The errors for the Mustangs were their biggest competitor causing the team a total of 28 errors for the match.

In set one and two, the Mustangs were unable to start the games with energy costing the sets to be given to the Buffaloes, 25-17 and 25-16. In set three, the Mustangs came back with strong urgency and fought back to take the set 25-23. In a close fourth set, the Buffaloes were barely able to push through 25-20.

"Our setters did a nice of finding the hitters that were having success. Our serving was on point in most situations and created problems for ENMU's offense all night, "said Coach Watts. "Nice team victory; on to the next," concluded Watts.

The Mustangs will continue their road games at New Mexico Highlands University on September 27, at 7:00PM MDT.
