SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University's Head Softball Coach Ashley Hickman has announced the hiring of former Mayville State University standout Breeana Martinez as an Assistant Softball Coach on Monday.
"We are excited to add Bree to our Mustang Family! She is passionate about the sport of softball and helping student-athletes be the best they can be. We know she will make a difference in their lives both on and off the field," said Hickman.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to be at Western New Mexico University. I thank Coach Hickman for allowing me to work, learn, and continue to grow from her. I am excited to help build the program and compete in one of the toughest conferences," said Martinez.
Martinez began her coaching career at Concordia University in Seward, NE, as a graduate assistant for the softball program from 2019-21. During her time at Concordia, Martinez help led her team to a very successful 2021 softball season including being GPAC No. 3 standing, GPAC Tournament Runner-Up, and playing in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament. All while coaching at Concordia, Martinez would earn her Master's degree through Concordia-Irvine in Athletic Administration, finishing with a 3.4 GPA.
From 2016-18, Martinez was recruited to play for Mayville State University. In the 2017-18 campaign, Martinez would find herself rated as one of the tops of the NAIA defenders, being ranked No. 1 for best fielding percentage. In 2019, Martinez would finish up her degree from Mayville, walking the stage with a bachelor's degree in Fitness and Wellness and a minor in coaching with a 3.45 GPA.
The native of Roseville, CA, began her collegiate softball career just a few exits down the highway at Sierra College, from 2012-2014 where she helped her team win the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship. She would then be recruited to play at Folsom Lake Community College for the 2015-16 season being named 2016 Bay Valley Conference First Team All-League.
Coach Martinez is also a member of the USSA International Softball Team and attended a conference in Prague Chez Republic in the summer of 2018.
