Silver City, NM. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team played their makeup match (originally scheduled 3/26) against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Thursday. The Mustangs played well in doubles, as they won all three doubles matches but it didn't translate in singles, with the Javelinas winning the match 4-3.
WNMU dominated in doubles, starting with Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) and Camila Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) winning 6-4. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) would also win 6-4. Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) and Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) were up 5-1 but the Javelinas would battle back before the Mustangs duo would win 7-6(2).
Paredes and Gonzales both went undefeated on the day. Gonzalez showed lots of fight winning the first set 6-3 and edged out her opponent 7-6(5) for set two. Paredes had a very intense match to end the day. Losing the first set 6-3, Paredes didn't get down, winning the second set 6-4 and winning the tiebreaker 1-0(6).
Tozzi and Gedlitschka both had opportunities to extend that match but the ball didn't go their way. Tozzi had a tough first set losing 6-0, but fought back in the second set before losing 7-6(4). Gedlitschka played a great set one, losing 7-5 but the Alessa Maier of TAMUK would go on to win 6-1.
Both men's and women's tennis will be playing Friday and Saturday at 10:00am, concluding the regular season. Friday will be against Arkansas-Fort Smith and Saturday will be against Cameron University.
