Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University softball falls in a doubleheader Friday, against Cameron University. The Mustangs hit a homerun in each game as Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) pitched 11.2 innings, as the Mustangs lost the first game 8-3 and the second game 16-6.
Game One
Senior, Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School) hit in all three runs for the Mustangs, blasting a three-run homerun in the 7th inning.Â
Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) got the start in game one for the Mustangs. Hunt pitched well despite giving up 6 earned runs. A three-run homerun put the game out of reach for WNMU. Hunt's final line goes 7.0 IP, 8 R (6 ER), 10 H, 1 K, and 1 BB, as she is now (0-9) on the year.
For the first time this season, the Mustangs walked more than their opponent. The Mustangs had just 6 hits, three of them by Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS). WNMU had runners on throughout the game, walking 5 times and getting hit by a pitch once.Â
The Aggies began to pull away in the 5th inning, scoring four runs. Three of the runs came from a three-run homerun by Callie Christensen. Christensen would get a sacrifice fly in the 7th inning, giving her 4 RBI's on the day.

Game Two
Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) got the start for the Mustangs in game two, as she didn't record an out and gave up 4 Aggie runs. Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) came into pitch, pitching 4.2 innings giving up 12 ER, 12 H, 4 K, and 4 BB. Munoz was credited with the loss and is now (1-9).Â
Freshman, Katie Knezevich (Goodyear, AZ/Verrado High School ) would get her first career homerun in the 3rd inning, blasting a three-run bomb to center.
The Aggies would have 10 extra-base hits, including 4 homeruns. Cameron would score 15 runs on those extra-base hits.
The Mustangs offense came alive, tallying 12 hits. $ Mustangs would have multiple hits, but the Aggie defense would WNMU to just 6 runs. Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) had a season-high of 3 hits on the day and would score twice.
WNMU's first runs of the game came in the second inning off a Nikki Medina (El Paso, TX/Montwood HS) double to left-center. The Mustangs would knock out the Aggies starting pitcher Jade Guzman in the 3rd after a Munoz double and the Knezevich homer. Guzman's final line goes 2.2 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 1 K, and 1 BB.
Cameron's Bethany Hines would come in stopping the Mustangs momentum. Hines would get the win, pitching 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 4 K, and 1 BB.
Christensen would continue to be a force at the plate, hitting a two-run homerun in the 1st inning, followed by a Haley Castle two-run homerun. Breanna Busby would a two-run homerun in the 3rd inning. Madyson Marvulli would top it off with a three-run homerun in the 5th inning.
