San Antonio, TX – Western New Mexico University softball lost a doubleheader Sunday, against St. Mary's (TX). Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) pitched 8.1 innings, as the Mustangs lost the first game 9-0 and the second game 11-0.

Game One

Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) got the start for the Mustangs. The first innings continue to be a nightmare, as five runs would come across. Abigale Carney of the Rattlers hit a three-run homerun giving SMU an initial three-run lead but the Rattlers weren't done. Alex Moreno would single in a run and Amber Gonzales would hit a sacrifice fly.

Hunt would pitch 5.0 IP, 9 ER, 14 H, 1 K, 1 BB. The Rattlers would hit 5 extra-base hits and Hunt is now (0-8) on the year.

The Mustangs offense continues to struggle, having just three base runners off of three hits. Sara Robertson pitched a complete game against the Mustangs for the Rattlers going 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 K. Roberston is now 4-4 on the year.

Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) continues to put the ball in play, going 1-2. Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) had a base hit to left in the 2nd inning and would go 1-2. Jane Ruiz was the only other Mustang to get a, as she reached on a bunt.

Game Two

Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) got the start for the Mustangs in game two but last just one out. Munoz had 5 BB and gave up 3 ER. Hunt would come in and minimize the damage getting a double play after walking in a run.

Hunt pitched as well as she could, pitching a clean 2nd and 3rd innings, however, in the 4th inning the Rattlers would figure her out. Hunt gave up 8 ER, including a three-run homerun by Tiffany Licon and a three-run double by Victoria Aldridge.

Britney Santellanes would finish the inning for Hunt. Santellanes's final line goes 0.1 IP, 1 H.

The Mustangs would only have three hits in the second game off of St. Mary's Julia Cruz. Cruz is now (4-4), pitching 5.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 K. WNMU's first hit would come in the 1st inning off an Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) single. In the 2nd inning, the Mustangs had a chance to score after Santellanes hit a double in the left-center gap, followed by a Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS) single. Paredes-Alvarez would steal second base but they would be stranded in scoring position.

St. Mary's would have 11 hits, 4 of which were extra-base hits. They would also have 11 walks and a hit-by-pitch.

G. Paredes-Alvarez: 1-2, 1 SB

WNMU will come home to play a four-game homestand starting a doubleheader, April 16th at 12pm MT, against Cameron University, and a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian University, April 18th, starting at 12pm MT.
