Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University tennis team played two matches Saturday, in beautiful Silver City, NM. Both matches were against LSC foes, UT Permian Basin, and UT Tyler. The Falcons of UTPB defeated the Mustang men 5-2 and the women won 4-3. The Patriots of UT Tyler defeated the Mustangs………….
Match one vs UTPB
Jonathan Vega and Rodrigo Mere played exceptionally well all day. Vega got things going against a very good Enrique Sanchez, defeating Sanchez 6-2 and 6-3. Mere faced off against Roberto Garcia, winning 6-0 and 6-4.Â
Erik Dallman and Mere paired up in doubles, getting the only duos win for the Mustangs after winning 7-5 against Sanchez and Garcia.
The women defeated the Falcons 4-3. Julia Terrazas (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) finished nearly at the same time helping clinch for the women. Terrazas played against maria Briones, defeating her 6-4 and 6-3. Gonzales faced Mariah Briones, defeating her 6-2 and 6-4.Â
The Mustangs #1 Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) and #2 Camila Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) both had hard-fought battles in their singles match before defeating their opponents. Tozzi beat Lore Mewis 6-4, 5-7, and 6-1. Gomez battled her whole match losing the first set 6-7(6), then won 7-6(6), and ultimately won the set after Anaya Singh retired.
Tozzi and Gomez paired up together for doubles, as they swept the set 6-0.
Match two vs UT Tyler
The Men's team went up against a good UT Tyler team, losing 6-1. Vega continued to fight in match two, defeating Egor Shestakov 6-2 and 6-3. Rodrigo Mere lost a tough match 4-6 and 6-7(3) to Yudai Watanabe.
The men played well in doubles as Joaquin Delpino and Vega lost 6-7(3). Jace Crawford and Lazius Brown lost a tough one, 6-4, and Dallman and Mere would follow suit losing 6-4.
For the women, Gomez was the only winner in singles. Gomez would face Gaini Ibrasheva, battling to get the win 7-6(1), 4-6, 7-5. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) played well but was just edged out losing 6-3 and 7-5.
Gedlitschka and Gonzalez teamed up in doubles, getting the only win, 6-2. Â
The Mustangs be back on the road for next weekend's three matches against St. Mary's University and Scheiner University, April 16th, and Texas Lutheran on April 17th.
