Silver City, NM. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team opened up conference against #11 Angelo State with a 6-1 loss. Camila Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) was the only Mustang with a victory Friday morning, at the Mustang Tennis Courts.
"Angelo State just had more consistent positive energy and focus than we did and that's what helped them prevail in five of the six singles matches," said Head Coach Alex Hunt.
Gomez played a great match as she fell in the first set 2-6. Gomez would continue to battle as she would win the next two sets 7-6(3) and 1-0(10).
"It was great to see Camilia keep her good form rolling. In her last match before this, she was up a set on the #8 women's player in the country before matches were pulled off. This result today against Angelo State's highly ranked number two singles player spoke a lot about how talented Camila is when she's playing confidence" said Hunt.
Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) played a good match against Dianela Rodriguez. Rodriguez would go on to won both matches 6-3Â
and 6-2.
In doubles, the Mustangs didn't play too well. Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Colombia) were playing very well before they were defeated 7-5. Gedlitschka and Gonzalez were up 5-1 and match point but had the match slip away from them.
"We struggled to find a rhythm. Paredes and Terrazas picked it up toward the end of the match and started playing well while Tozzi and Gomez couldn't get much going" said Hunt.
"Although the team fell short today, there is still plenty to look forward to this season! We are laying the foundation for something big in the near future," said Hunt.
The Mustangs will be traveling as they play April 2nd, against Dallas Baptist in Arlington, TX, followed by a match against UT Dallas in Richardson, TX. April 3rd will be their third LSC match against Midwestern State, followed by a non-conference match against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
