Mustangs End Road Trip With a Pair of Losses Against Angelo State

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Mustangs took on Angelo State at the nice sunny and 75, Mayer Field, in San Angelo, TX. Western New Mexico University's softball team had a tough day with the bats, scoring just two runs on the first game (12-2) and couldn't scrap a run across in their second, losing 8-0. 

Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) got the start for the Mustangs pitching 3.0 innings, giving up 7 H, 10 ER, and 9 BB. Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) came in for 1.0 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 ER, and a walk. Munoz is now 1-5 on the year.

The Mustangs only two runs in the game came in the third inning as Santellanes got things going with a walk, followed by a double by Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School). Munoz came to the plate, helping herself out, lacing a two-RBI double in the left-center gap. 

WNMU had four hits in the first game all coming by different Mustang hitters. Five Mustangs were left on base, three of which were in scoring position.

Keilei Carcia had a day for the Rambelles, having two homeruns, one being a grand slam in the second inning. Garcia also had a three-run home run in the first inning.

Game 2

Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) had a team-high of two hits, going 2-2 in the second game. Santellanes and Burnett were the only other Mustangs to get a hit in the second game.

Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) had her fourth start of the year as she is now 0-4. Hunt gave up 11 hits and 7 walks leading to 14 ER given up in 4.0 innings of work.

Garcia had the Mustangs number, continuing to have the advantage, driving in 5 Rambelle runners. Jade Strother and Mykayla Stroud had three RBIs as well.

The Mustangs will head have a four-game homestand starting with a doubleheader, Friday, March 26th against Texas A&M-International. Texas A&M-Kingsville with then come to town playing a doubleheader, Sunday, March 28th.
