SILVER CITY, N.M. – At the warm PlainsCapital Park in Lubbock, TX, Western New Mexico University's softball lost their doubleheader against Lubbock Christian University 12-0 in the first game and 9-0 in the second game.
The Mustangs couldn't get their offense going as they tallied just two hits on the day. In the first game, the Mustangs were putting the ball in play, as they only had five strikeouts.
Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) was the only Mustang to get a hit in the first game, as she had a hit to 3rd base in the 3rd inning.
Walks continue to hurt the Mustangs, extending innings for the Chaps to score. Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) pitched another complete game as she is now 1-4 on the season, after giving up 12 R (9 ER), 7 H, 1 K, 9 BB.Â
The Lady Chaps had 6 extra-base hits on the day. Athena Muniz had a two-run homerun in the 3rd inning and Bella Smith got in for a pinch-hit, stroking solo shot in the 4th inning.
Game 2
Offense couldn't get going, as Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School) was the only Mustang to get a hit. Burnett had an infield single, beating out the throw from second base.
Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) had her third start of the year as she is now 0-3. Walks were an issue for Hunt as well, walking six on the day. Hunt's final stands as 9 R (6 ER), 6 H, 1 K, 6 BB.
LCU's Tyla Lee had a great second game, going 2-3 with a triple, homerun, 1 R, and 2 RBI. Skylar Herrera had a team of 3 RBI on the day, including a 2 RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs will head to Angelo State for Sunday's doubleheader starting at 10 am CT and the second game to follow.
