Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University's Softball played their first home games today in over a year against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Mustangs couldn't get the offense going as TAMUC took the series after defeating the Mustangs 12-2 and 19-9.
The Lions were currently on a six game win streak including five teams being shutout. Though the Lions continue their win streak to eight games, they did not shutout the Mustangs.
Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS) continued to swing the hot stick, blasting a two-run homerun over the center field fence. Those were the only two runs of the game for WNMU.Â
The Mustangs were put in a hole early, giving up 8 runs in the first inning. The Lions walked 14 times and paid dividends, putting the score out of reach. The Mustangs would go on to collect just six hits and walk twice.
TAMUC's Emily Otto did a superb job keeping the Mustangs off balance, striking out seven and limited the free bases to three.
Game 2
Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) got her first collegiate start for WNMU, but it didn't go as what was wished for. Madison Schaefer of TAMUC started the game with a solo shot down the left line. Schaefer would get up again in the 2nd inning and hit a drive over the left field for her second homerun, bring in two runs.
Consistency and continuing to add runs is exactly what TAMUC did. Up 16-2 at one point, the Lions had the offense going. Commerce had 18 hits, seven were extra base hits and they continued to be patient at the plate walking nine times.
In the 5
th inning,
Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) got things going for the Mustangs with the first of her doubles in the inning. The Mustangs would go on to have six hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, bringing in 7 runs. The game was ended in the 5
th right when the Mustang just started getting their offense intact and gaining momentum.  Â
Sunday, March 14
th, the Mustangs will be back at Mustang Field, hosting UT Tyler for a double-header starting at 10:00am and 12:00pm.
