Mustangs Fall Short to Nationally Ranked Seward County and Air Force

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Saturday, Western New Mexico University's Tennis programs played nationally ranked Seward County Community College and the Lady Mustangs also played an exhibition match against the Air Force Academy. Due to bad weather this past week, ice and snow forced the event to be held at Bush Tennis Center in Midland, TX.

"This is arguably the toughest match day on our schedule and we had to deal with some crazy weather conditions, causing an unpredictable start to our matches," said Head Coach Alex Hunt.

SEWARD COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The men only had one match on the day facing #3 Seward County Community College. The Mustangs battled against the nationally-ranked Seward County but fell 7-0. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) faced off with Luciano Fisicaro and Kyllian Savary just getting edged out 6-3.

The Lady Mustangs had two matches on the day facing #8 Seward County Community College and Division I Air Force Academy. In doubles, Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) and Camilia Gomez were the only Mustangs to win on the day, defeating both schools' #1 duos 6-4. Kasja Gedlitschka and Nicold Gonzales were just nudged out, 7-6(5).

"Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil/) and Camilia Gomez played exceptionally well, as they extended their unbeaten streak this season, defeating nationally ranked JUCO and Division I doubles teams," said Hunt.

In singles, the Mustangs didn't go down without a fight. Tozzi played a phenomenal match. After losing the first set 6-3, she won the second set 6-3, and went the distance in a nail biter before falling 11-9. Similarly, Gedlitschka played a stellar match. After winning the first set 7-5, SCCC's Lucia Popluharova stepped up winning 6-2 and forced set three. Gedlitschka battled but was downed 10-6.

AIR FORCE

Playing Division I, Air Force was much of the same results. In doubles, Tozzi and Gomez defeated Air Forces Meredith Jones and Mebeli Beccera, 6-4. In singles, Tozzi contended with Jones but was outmaneuvered 7-6(2) and 6-4. Gomez and Paredes both made a stand against their opponents before being knocked off 6-4 and 6-2.

"Each Mustang battled against some nationally-ranked JUCO and Division I competition. It was great to see the growth of raising their level of play and rise to the occasion," said Hunt. "Exciting times are ahead as the WNMU Mustang Tennis Squad continues to push forward."

The Men will play an exhibition with Northern Arizona University (3/6/21) before both teams will road trip to sunny Southern California playing four opponents in three days, starting March 16th against BIOLA, March 17th against Concordia and Point Loma Nazarene, and March 18th against Azusa Pacific.
