Lawton, OK – The Western New Mexico Mustangs began their on-the-road-weekend Thursday evening in Aggie Gym. After a tough battle, the Mustang fell short to the Cameron University Aggies with the final score being 60-85.
In the first quarter, Mustangs were looking to move the ball around to get their offense set. WNMU out shot out the Aggies shooting 36.36% from the field goal range in comparison to CU shooting a 26.32%. The score after quarter one ended 11-16 WNMU trailing.
The second quarter still showed great shooting percentages from the Mustang team hitting 46.15% from the field goal range while the Aggies shot 31.82%. Personal fouls hurt the Mustangs as they sent the Aggies to the line quite a bit and were forced to change their own offense too many times. The second quarter ended 24-35 CU leading.
Quarter three started with senior Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa HS) refusing to give up without a fight landing two jumpers from the field goal range to give the team 4 points on the board within the first two minutes. Mometum was beginning to run for WNMU after Vickery had another steal, but costly turnovers would be what caused the Mustangs to trail. The quarter ended with 43-69 WNMU down by 14 points.
The final quarter did not go the way the Mustangs were hoping for and the Aggies continued to grow their lead. WNMU struggled to run a smooth offense and were unable to find the net. The final score of the game was 60-85 giving Cameron the victory.
The largest obstacle course for the Mustangs was being able to find a smooth transitioning offense as the team had 35 turnovers. The three point line is what seems to have went great for the Mustangs all game ending with a 44.4% shooting average beyond the arc.
