Canyon, TX – The Western New Mexico Mustangs matched up against the West Texas University Buffaloes Saturday afternoon at First United Bank Center. The Buffaloes came out on top and defeated the Mustangs 74-47.
The first half of the match was struggle for both teams to find the net as both teams shot 0% from behind the arc with a total of 13 shots together. At the end of quarter one, the score was 16-12 with West Texas holding a small lead. The Buffaloes found the rim shooting 36.84% from the field goal range and have the chance to shoot 6 free throws. In comparison, the Mustangs struggled once again to shoot with only 18.75% from the field goal range and 4 attempts for free throws. By halftime, the score was 34-19 as the Mustangs trailed by 15.
Senior veteran
Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial HS) started out the third quarter with a 3-pointer to help the Mustangs gain some momentum offensively. Sophomore
Olivia Lee (Peoria, AZ/Cactus HS) had some great fast break lay-ups and rebounds to shorten the lead for the Buffaloes. By the end of the third quarter, the Mustangs trailed 61-32.
The fourth and final quarter of the game showed better effort from the Mustang offense as they took 21 shots for 42.8% shooting percentage. What hurt the Mustangs the most in the final quarter were fouls as the gave the Buffaloes the chance to score 14 points and the team made 12 of those points.
Turnovers challenged WNMU to get their offense going with 19 turnovers and the Buffaloes had 12 steals. The Mustangs were out rebounded 59 to 36 by the Buffaloes and WNMU fouled the opponent a total of 16 times.
Western New Mexico University will be back at home for two home games at Drag's Court against Eastern New Mexico University and Lubbock Christian University.
