Silver City, NM – The Mustangs of Western New Mexico University Football team battled against Central Washington University on a warm Saturday afternoon, at Ben Altamirano Field. The Mustangs put up 29 points, but it wasn't enough for the Wildcats 54 points.
Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) started the game for the Mustangs throwing for 358 yards and two touchdowns. Larsen found eight different receivers but Joshua Powell (St. Louis, MO/Hillcrest HS) was his go-to man, catching eight balls for 119 yards.
Bryce Coleman (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View HS) was WNMU's leading rusher, gaining 73 yards and finding paydirt twice. Coleman also had 4 catches for 33 yards.
The Mustangs had 50 tackles, seven came from Kaleb Guiterrez and Isaiah Webb (Tucson, AZ/Cienega HS) and Denaylan Fuimaono (Long Beach, CA/Carson HS) both 6. WNMU's defense also had 5 pass break-ups.
WNMU's first score of the game was their only score in the first half, coming from a Larsen 18 yard pass to David Telles (Los Angeles, CA/Franklin HS). The Mustangs cut the lead for the Wildcats to 13-6.Â
With 57 second left in the second half, CWU scored on a 52 yard pass from Quincy Glasper to Tyler Flanagan, making the lead 20-6.
The Mustangs scored early in the 3rd quarter, cutting the Wildcat lead back to 7 points, thanks to Larsen to Rankin for a 14 yard touchdown.
Both teams would trade off a pair of field goals on the ensuing drives. CWU's Flanagan began to put the game out of reach, taking off for a 69 yard touchdown run, making the score 30-16.
Down 37-16, Bryce Coleman (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View HS) rushed for his first of two touchdowns of the game.Â
Just before the 3rd quarter ended, Glasper found Kellen Gregory for a 25 yard connection and score. Answering right back, the Wildcats netted a field goal.
Continuing to throw the ball well, Glasper targeted Tai-John Mizutani for a 20 yard touchdown grab, making the score 47-23.
The Mustangs continued to use Coleman, where Coleman would find the endzone for the second time. WNMU would go for two, but was unsuccessful.Â
The Wildcats scored one more time before the game ended, with Glasper throwing for his fifth touchdown of the game to Jojo Hillel.
Glasper ended the game with 452 yards, throwing for 5 touchdowns to 5 different receivers, and rushed for 46 yards. 8 receivers got in the action for the Wildcats with Darius Morrison leading the team with 117 yards on 5 catches. Jojo Hillel had a team high 11 catches for 78 yards.
Flanagan made the most of his 8 carries on the day, rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown. Raashad Boddie rushed for 18 yards and also found the end zone.Â
WNMU will have a bye next weekend, but will finish the year out against New Mexico Highlands for the La Batalla Bowl, on November 20th, for a Noon kick-off, at Ben Altamirano Field.Â
