Mustangs Secure Win Number Three Versus Northern New Mexico College

Silver City, NM– On Wednesday evening, the Western New Mexico University Mustangs took on the Northern New Mexico College Eagles at Drag's Court in Silver City, NM. After a slow start, the Mustangs pulled through to defeat the Eagles 56-40.  

Throughout the first quarter, the Eagles placed immense defensive pressure on the Mustangs and it seemed to have caught the team off guard. After the rocky start,the Mustangs ended the first quarter 11-8. 

The second quarter showed a bit more energy from WNMU as senior Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa HS) was not afraid to run the ball up to the net and make a consistent few lay-ups for the team. Senior Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa HS) ended the second quarter splashing a three-pointer from downtown to end the quarter 36-23.

Third quarter led WNMU to score 15 points and change up their defensive strategy. The team averaged a 42.9% shooting percentage from the field goal range  which was a much better improvement from the first quarter being 29.4%.The final for the quarter ended 41-28 leaving WNMU with a hefty lead. 

The fourth quarter of the game showed great effort from junior Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS). Walter scored on three lay-ups and one energizing 3-pointer for a total of 9 points. The Eagles fought back by taking many shooting attempts, but could not find the net. Mustangs defeated the Eagles 56-40 to continue with their winning streak. 
 
WNMU dominated NNMC in rebounds having 47 total in comparison to 39. Both teams had 3 blocks on the night and just about the same number of steals: WNMU 11 NNMC 10. The number of assists for the Mustangs stacked up throughout the game totaling for 17 while the Eagles only had 4.

Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS): 13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 assist
Destiney Johnson (El Paso, TX/Parkland HS): 12 points, 11 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Zyan Smith (Queen Creek, AZ/Mesquite High School ): 9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 assists.
