Oklahoma City, OK – The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team performed in a nail biting match series against Oklahoma Christian University (OCU). The teams played with grit and passion leaving the OCU Eagles with the win in five sets.
Senior
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) made a strong appearance on the court today with 12 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks, and 11 digs.
Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) had a great afternoon with 7 kills followed by
Marlaynah McDonald (Silver City, N.M./Silver High School) shortly behind her with 6 kills on the match.
Senior
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) was the lead assist holder for the Mustangs ending with 21 assists. Freshman
Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) trailed her teammate earning 14 assist and 8 digs.
The Mustang defensive had a strong wall put up especially by junior Zoe Chatterton who raked up 6 blocks during the match.
Vianey Lopez Marrufo (El Paso, TX/Del Valle HS) played well having 2 blocks and 9 digs.
In set one, the Eagles gained momentum on the court that was unbreakable costing the Mustangs set one 13-25 to OCU. In set two, hitting errors were the strongest opponent for the WNMU offense as they ended with 7 hitting errors.
However, set three is when the Mustangs got into rhythm and synergy was following all around the team as they defeated the Eagles 25-22. Set four was on the side of WNMU as the Mustang drive was held strong with a competitive win over OCU, 25-21. In the final set, set five, the Mustangs fell just short to the Eagles being defeated 15-9.
WNMU Mustangs will make their way back home for their next two games on October 14
th and 16
th playing against Cameron University and Midwestern State University-TX. Thursday's match will begin at 6:00 pm MT and Saturday's match will begin at 12:00 pm MT.
